Dorothy Susan Smailes Nutt
Dorothy Susan Smailes Nutt, 89, of Quail Haven Village died Wednesday, February 3, 2010.
She was born February 20, 1920, in Kingston, Pennsylvania, daughter of Thomas Hunter and Beatrice Ivy Truscott Smailes. Mrs. Nutt had moved to Pinehurst in 2008 from Exeter, New Hampshire.
She graduated from high school in Wilkes-Barre, PA, and received her BA from Bucknell University having completed her first two years at Bucknell Junior (now Wilkes) College. She did graduate work at both the University of Nebraska and Hunter College. In 1942 she married Richard Nutt, who died in 1997.
Mrs. Nutt was an extraordinary English teacher for 5th through 9th grades, serving students in Shickshinny and State College, PA, Lincoln, NE and Dobbs Ferry, NY. In 1959 and 1962, Mrs. Nutt was the co-director with her husband of two national Methodist summer Work Camp projects, in Puerto Rico. She was co-sponsor of Kappa Phi at Nebraska and Penn State. She was a member of AAUW, Alpha Kappa Delta (teachers honorary), WSCS and NEA.
On retirement, Mrs. Nutt and her husband Richard Nutt moved to Exeter, NH, to be close to their children and grandchildren. During her retirement she was active in the Women’s Society and the Prayer Shawl ministry of the Exeter Congregational Church. She was a member of the Exeter Women’s Club and its Literary group, and the East Side Current Events Club. While in Exeter she volunteer at the League of Craftsmen’s shop, the Independence Museum and the Exeter Hospital. On moving to North Carolina, she was active in the Congregational Church of Pinehurst.
She is survived her daughter and son-in-law Kathy and Roger Nekton of Vass, NC, her daughter Nan Nutt of Epping, NH, her son and daughter-in-law Thomas Nutt-Powell and Bonnie Randall of Brookline, MA., her sister and brother-in-law Bea and Carl Howe of Parrish, FL, and her brother-in-law and his wife Evan and Nan Nutt of Long Beach, CA.
She was a devoted grandmother to Kirsten Nutt Alexander and Charles Swift of Boston, MA; Michael Nutt and Regina Weeks of Haverhill, MA; Melita Noel and Javier Cantu of Austin, TX, Tyler and Tiffany Nekton, of Rye, NH, Maikki Nekton of Fredricksburg, MD, Lily Nutt, of Epping, NH, her step-grandchildren Jeffry and Allison Powell of New York, and James and Fawn Nekton of Occidental, CA. She is also survived by great-grandchildren Caitlin Powell, Sadie Alexander, Antulio, Cassandra and Adriandra Cantu, and Mackenzie Nekton.
She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, their spouses and children.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, February 20 at the Congregational Church of Pinehurst.

The passing of Dottie was announced in the FUMC in Wallingford on Sunday. Even though Dick and Dottie were here for two short years in 1943 to 1945 they made quite an impact! At least 7 of us in the congregation were stunned. We send our love to you all.
