Dr. Robert F. Lockwood
Dr. Robert F. Lockwood, 86, died Sunday, January 17, 2010 at the Inn at Quail Haven in Pinehurst.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, May 2, 2010 at Boles Funeral Home in Southern Pines.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy of 64 years; four children Bob Lockwood and wife Jenni of Portland, OR, Carol Roche and husband Jim of Portage, MI, Jim Lockwood and wife Barbara of Gilbert, AR, and Janet Larsen and husband Arne of Beaverton, OR; nine grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father in 1927, his mother in 1996 and his brother in 1998.
Born May 2, 1923 in Kalamazoo, MI to the late Robert F. and Ruth Marie Kuhn Lockwood, he graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1941. He attended Western Michigan University and entered the Army in 1943, serving in Europe from 1944-46. He met and married Dorothy Stoddard, who was an Army nurse, in Nancy, France on January 18, 1946. Mr. Lockwood then returned to Western Michigan University where he graduated and went on to University of Detroit Dental School in 1951. Practicing dentistry in Kalamazoo and Portage, MI for 31 years, he was a life member of the American Dental Association, the Michigan Dental Association, past president of the Kalamazoo Valley Dental Society, past president of Kalamazoo South Rotary, and a member of the Portage School Board for eight years.
Retiring to North Carolina in 1982, he served on various boards in Seven Lakes and Pine Grove Village, and was president of the AARP Chapter in Southern Pines.
