Brown, age 97, passed peacefully from natural causes on July 21, 2010 at his home in Pinehurst. Funeral service will be held 11:00 am Monday, July 26, 2010 at Boles Funeral Home in Pinehurst with interment to follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Southern Pines. Family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm on Sunday, July 25 at Boles Funeral Home in Pinehurst. He is survived by his son James Jr. and wife Charlotte of Pensacola, FL and his daughter Bonnie Farmer and husband John of Allen, TX; eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. James, who was known professionally as Jimmy Brown, was born in Pittsburgh, PA, but lived a great part of his life in New York City and New Hyde Park, NY before retiring to Pinehurst in 1986. He and his beloved wife, Helen, chose Pinehurst because of the numerous, quality golf courses. Golf was a constant in Jim’s life for many years. Jimmy was one of the last of the “Big Band” musicians who began their careers in the1930’s. He played saxophone and clarinet and sang beginning with Sammy Kaye, then with Blue Barron, and finally with Guy Lombardo. His musical career was interrupted by WWII where he served a brief stint in a US Army band just as the war came to a close in 1945. Recognizing that the Big Band era was about over, he used his musical and singing skills to spend nearly 30 years on Madison Avenue making singing commercials for radio and television. Several of his popular commercials were: Tide; Winston cigarettes; Oldsmobile; Papst Blue Ribbon Beer, and a stint on TV as a member of the Texico singers on the Milton Berle show. He was an active member of three unions: SAG-Screen Actors Guild; AFRA—American Federation of Radio Artists; the local 802 of the musicians union. Jimmy often mentioned his favorite prayer, which was the Serenity Prayer: “God, grant me the serenity to accept things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference”. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Community Home Care & Hospice, 185 W. Illinois Ave., Southern Pines, NC 28387. Boles Funeral Home of Pinehurst is serving the family.
