Aunt Helen will always be in my heart as a wonderfully welcoming lady. She made me feel as though she’d been waiting to meet me, her nephew’s new girlfriend, when I first came to NC to meet his family.

Her stories about her years in NY, living on peanut butter to have enough money to go to the theatre, brought dimension to her earlier years.

I’m so grateful we were able to spend time together over the last 17 years, and that she visited us in San Diego, not in the least to see the Pacific Ocean.

May you rest in peace, dear lady.

  4. Kind words from Nancy Haddock

I’ve actually known Helen since I was a nursing student at UNC. Our careers came together on and off ever since, and we always remained friends. I can remember many an afternoon with other UNC-W faculty in her condo in Wilmington plotting the overthrow of the program at that time. I can remember how jealous I was that her beautiful hair always turned under so perfectly. And I remember fondly her lovely tidewater speech. For a time, it seemed we would meet up regularly in the grocery store (the wine section), but I have missed her over the last years. And I will miss her still.

We live in Franklin,VA and have known Helen for many years She was a bridesmaid in our wedding and a good friend. We are saddened by her passing. We received a Christmas card from her last year and tried to call her by were unable to get her telephone no. We regret not trying harder. We last saw her in Wilmington and have missed seeing her since.

  6. Kind words from Mary-Kate Heffern

Helen and I were classmates together in the School of Public Health, UNC and became friends. She was a good friend to me, stranger from the north, and shared her family and friends. After graduation she went her way and I went mine but I did speak with her after seeking her out a year or so ago through the Alumni Association of UNC.

This morning I woke after having a dream about her, and I wondered how to get in touch again. I looked her up on the internet, and found her here. A good friend when I needed one many years ago. God rest your dear soul and bless all of your family who were so good to me many years ago. Katie Rellahan Heffern.
