11-16 scan 1077William N. “Norm” Hawkins passed away at home on Tuesday, November 17, 2009.

Norm was born in Spokane, WA May 12, 1917, son of Mark and Marjorie Hawkins and was named after his grandfather, William S. Norman—a Spokane pioneer business man. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Marjorie Liston Hawkins, a daughter Leslie Domitor and husband Paul of Spokane, WA, and son Mark Hawkins of Southern Pines. Also a grandson Paul Charbeneau and his wife Yvette and great-grandchildren Brenden and Camryn of Everett, WA and granddaughter Elisabeth Fetcho and husband Brett of Fall City, WA.

veteran flagNorm had an interesting career history starting in 1937 at KGIR radio, Butte, MT as bookkeeper, salesman, and announcer for 4 years. Norm was a flight instructor in Billings, MT in 1941. Beginning in 1942, Norm served as a Major in the USAF and went on to fly for Pan American Airlines. After the war, Norm was a contract pilot for Riddle Aviation flying Miami-San Paulo, Brazil for the Brazilian Air Force and went on to start a freight airline flying from NY, Miami, and Puerto Rico.

From 1948-71, Norm was in television broadcasting: Sales Manager for WWJ-TV in Detroit, MI; KXLY-TV in Spokane, WA; American Sales Manager CKLY-TV Windsor, Detroit, MI and Ontario, CAN; WDCA-TV Washington, DC; and WIFB, Philadelphia, PA.

From 1972-87, Norm operated a small business consulting firm in Miami, FL assisting small businesses with daily operations and long term performance.

In 1988, Norm and Marge retired Southern Pines, NC to enjoy a lot of great golf, friendly neighbors and the beauty of the North Carolina Sandhills.

Norm has said that he was a lucky man to have had a life with a good family, good friends, and several interesting careers, and would love to live his life all over again!

A memorial service will be held at a later date so as not to interfere with golf!
