Obituary for John Francesco Urbinati

John Francesco Urbinati was born in New Haven CT on September 9, 1929, to Filomena and Giovanni Urbinati, and passed on October 4, 2019. He grew up in the Hill section of New Haven, graduated from St Anthony’s Grammar School and Hillhouse High School. John served as an acolyte at church at grammar school, and president of his 8th grade class. During high school he played on the varsity hockey team, He graduated in 1947, and left his family to serve in the Air Force, stationed in Shreveport LA. Soon after he attended Tulane University to pursue a degree in architecture, and graduated in 1957 from The University of Illinois Urbana-Champagne. Upon returning home to New Haven, he went to a class reunion and met the love of his life, Paula Augliera. They married in 1959 and were together for over 60 years. Together they travelled extensively, including ski trips in Switzerland. Italy and Austria.

John worked for several architecture firms in New Haven and around Connecticut as a licensed architect, and was a member of the AIA. He was a member of several civic organizations including Rotary and Amity Club. John served as a Eucharistic minister and usher at church. One of his proudest achievements was completing the New York Times Crossword puzzle in pen. Additionally, another passion was food, and John would often spend Sundays cooking, drinking wine and listening to opera as he celebrated the pride he had regarding his Marchegiana and Italian heritage. Family would stop by and he would happily feed them. He maintained fluent Italian, often reciting passages and proverbs. In 1995, after retirement from the State of Connecticut, John and Paula relocated to Pinehurst North Carolina. They had a handsome set of friends with whom they travelled, visited museums, attended lectures, volunteered, and entertained often. John served on the committee of the Ruth Pauley Lecture Series, and was active in the Knights of Columbus at Sacred Heart Parish. He will mostly be remembered as a man with a sheepish grin, who led a rich and joyful life of 90 years.

John is predeceased by his brother Eugene and sister Adele, and his brother and sister in laws Joy and Bill Haggett. He is survived by his wife Paula, daughters Elisa (Juan) of Pinehurst and Kristin (David) and only grandson Alexander of Chapel Hill, and sister Marie Acampora (Alphonse) of West Haven CT.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, 300 Dundee Rd. Pinehurst, on Wed, Oct. 23rd at 11:00 A.M.
