Obituary for Marie Joan Banta

Marie Joan Banta, 95, of Pinehurst, NC passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at First Health Hospice House in Pinehurst.

Marie was born May 30, 1924 in Manhattan, NY to the late Ives and Margaret Kiley Camus. She grew up in Jackson Heights, Queens NY. She worked at Best & Co. in NYC where she met the love of her life Raymond Banta, and they married on October 7, 1950 remaining in Jackson Heights for 13 years. With their expanding family, they moved to Blauvelt, NY where they raised their family and her beloved beagle Jim. After 30 years they retired to Pinehurst, NC and joined the Pinewild Community.

As a member of the Greatest Generation, Marie was a devout Catholic who firmly believed in love of God, Country and family. Marie was a member of the Women of Sacred Heart and the Pinewild Women’s Bible Study. She was one of the founding members of the Linden Garden Club. She was a champion bowler and loved tennis and walking. She also enjoyed playing Bridge and Mah Jongg and working crossword and jumble puzzles. Ray, her loving and devoted husband of almost 69 years, would like for Marie to be remembered for her great love for her family and friends, a tender heart and a humble mind.

Marie felt blessed that she was able to travel extensively through the United States and overseas including a memorable trip to the Holy Land. Upon the return from the trips abroad she was always grateful that she was born in the USA.

In addition to her parents, Marie is preceded in death by her sister Marguerite Dulaney.

She is survived by her husband Raymond Banta; six children, Jeanne Marie Goldberg (Douglas), Raymond G. Banta (Lucy), Richard Banta, Geraldine Banta (Robert Solano), Barbara Lent (Jack) and Lawrence Banta; six grandchildren, Sarah Yatto, Meredith Molinaro (Telly), James Banta (Dana), Katherine McGrath (Christopher), Zachary Banta, and Emma Lent; seven great-grandchildren, Madelyn and Abigail Molinaro, Sebastian Bogan, Nathaniel and Jacob McGrath, and Wells and Poppy Banta. She is also survived by her sister Cele Donoghue, her twin sister Regina Corrado, brother Edward Camus, sister-in-law Jane Banta and many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday July 16, 2019 at 11AM at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, 300 Dundee Rd., Pinehurst, NC 28374. Inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in Marie’s name be made to First Health Hospice & Palliative Care, 150 Applecross Road, Pinehurst. NC 28374 or St. Joseph of the Pines Coventry Assisted Living, 100 Gossman Drive, Southern Pines, NC 28387 or any other charity of your choice.

The family would like to recognize the staff of First Health Hospice House and Coventry Assisted Living for their excellent care. They would also like to especially thank members of her Bible Study, Mah Jongg and Bridge Groups for keeping Marie involved far beyond what her capabilities allowed.

Services are entrusted to Boles Funeral Home of Pinehurst.
