Obituary for George Maughan

Retired COL. George Maughan, 95, of Southern Pines, passed away September 15th 2017, at First Health Hospice House. Family will receive visitors on Sunday, September 17th from 5-7 pm at Boles Funeral Home of Southern Pines. A military burial is scheduled for Monday, September 18th at 2 pm at the State Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Fayetteville.

George was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Annie Margaret (Dot) Maughan. He is survived by his son, COL (R) Phil Maughan and wife Verna of Fayetteville, NC, Debbie Byrd and husband Bill of Summerville, SC, and Diane Schultz and husband Kenny of Spokane, WA.

George was born in Bowie, Maryland on September 4, 1922. He earned a bachelor’s degree in History and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Wofford College. He was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, the National Honor Society. George received his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Alabama.

George entered the Army as a Private in the Virginia National Guard in 1940 and continued in World War II with the 29th Infantry Division. He attended Infantry OCS and then held numerous Infantry leadership positions at Ft. Benning, GA; Trieste, Italy and the Berlin Brigade. COL Maughan was accessed into the Regular Army in the Signal Corps in 1958. He served in numerous Signal Corps assignments to include a tour in Korea and Headquarters Department of the Army (HDQA). COL. Maughan went to Germany with U.S. Army Strategic Communications Command and served as the Deputy Commander and Commander of Signal Group - Mediterranean. He then returned to HQDA. COL Maughan was then assigned to HQS U.S. Army - Vietnam. He then was assigned to the J-6, Joint Chiefs of Staff. COL Maughan ended his career as Director U.S. Army Communications - Electronics Evaluation and Testing Agency at Ft. Belvoir, VA. After 37 years of service, he moved to Whispering Pines, NC with Dot to enjoy their retired life to the fullest.

He received numerous awards and commendations which include Legion of Merit 2 OLC, Bronze Star 2 OLC, Meritorious Service Medal 2 OLC, Army Commendation Medal and Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal, First Class.
