Born in Brussels, Belgium on May 3, 1929, he was the son of the late Leon and Marguerite Servais Souweine. Growing up in an occupied country during WW II shaped the man he became. The American soldiers inspired his desire to not only come to America, but to become a citizen of a country he loved.

He finished his high school education in Brussels, Belgium, and then he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, class of 1953, where he met his wife Mary Jane Hutchens. They were married in 1954 and together raised a beautiful family. He was involved in the food industry in Belgium and later on in NC as an executive of Food World, Inc. and Harris Teeter. His wife was his dear, loving partner until she passed away in June 2008. Over the last 20 years he volunteered and served many organizations including the Hospice House, Clara McLean House and the Cancer Center. His passions included forming the foundation “Promise of Hope”, a lecture series providing education on life threating illnesses. Along with his dear friend Herm Collier, together they would visit the many patients for the FirstHealth Foundation. For the last 10 years, they truly made a positive difference for the patients as well as the staff at FirstHealth Hospital.

His four daughters, seven granddaughters and six great - grandchildren were his pride. After retirement, he became involved with the foundation of FirstHealth of the Carolinas and gave it all his enthusiasm. Later on he married Joel Rich, a widow, and together they learned to smile again. He had a wonderful life and always had a very special appreciation for his adopted country.

He is survived by his wife, Joel Rich. He was the father of Janie Henderson, husband David, Catherine Calloway, husband David, Marie - France Allred, husband Tim and Sophie Neely, husband Jimmy. He was the grandfather of Ashley Moody, husband Bryan, Rebecca Mead, husband Phil, Lauren Burton, Andie Calloway, Brittany Hout, husband Jeremy, Brooke Allred and Meredith Neely. He was the great - grandfather of Montgomery and Tess Moody, Seeley and Holden Hout, and Monroe and Walker Mead. He was the uncle of Claudine Debremaker, husband Luke, and Anne Debremaker. He was the step - father of Jed Rich and Laurie Hopper. He is also survived by his wife’s family, the Hutchens family.
